Melody to Notes is made by Magmanet. The short version: your singing, recordings and melodies stay on your device. The app also sends anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off.
Only anonymous usage statistics (see below), which you can turn off. Melody to Notes has no sign-up, no accounts, no advertising and no tracking. We never sell or share your data. There is no server for transcription: every step of turning sound into notes happens on your phone.
The app asks for microphone access only when you tap Record or start a practice turn, after explaining why. While you record, the sound is analysed on the phone to show the live note and, when you stop, to write the melody as notes. Audio is never sent anywhere.
Copy backup (Settings → Your data) copies your melodies and settings (not the recordings) as text to your clipboard; where you paste it is up to you, the app never uploads it. Export and share (MusicXML, MIDI, PDF, image, audio or note names) opens your phone's share sheet and goes only where you send it.
Melody to Notes works entirely offline. The only internet requests are the anonymous usage statistics below and, on Android, the update check. On iPhone and iPad there is no update check: the App Store handles updates. The "More free sheet music" buttons open the IMSLP or Mutopia website in your browser only when you tap them; the app itself downloads nothing from them.
On Android, once a day the app checks for a newer version by asking the Magmanet server (EU, Contabo) — the request contains only the app name, its version number and how it was installed; the server stores no identifiers and no IP address. If the server is unavailable the app downloads the public version file from GitHub Pages instead (GitHub may see your IP address). You can turn this off in Settings.
Melody to Notes sends anonymous usage statistics over HTTPS (a short ping once a day; usage events a few times a day at most, batched) to Magmanet's own server in the EU (Contabo), not to Google or any other third party. It sends the app name and version, your operating-system version (Android or iOS), your language, how the app was installed (on Android: from Google Play, the website or elsewhere; on iPhone and iPad: the App Store or TestFlight), a random install ID made by the app, anonymous usage events (which screens and features are used, for how long, how many notes a transcription found, which export formats are used) and counts of errors by type (a short code for the kind of error, never a message or any content). On Android it also sends your phone's manufacturer and model (never the name you gave the phone); on iPhone and iPad it does not send the device model. Never audio, never your notes or titles. On the server the ID is hashed and no IP address is stored; raw data is deleted after 400 days. It is used only to count active users and improve the app.
This is on by default. Turn it off in Settings ("Share anonymous usage statistics"); that stops sending immediately and deletes the random ID and any unsent events from your phone.
No location, camera, contacts or storage permissions. Files are opened through the system file picker (on iPhone and iPad, the Files app) or arrive when you share or "open" them with the app.
Melody to Notes is a general-audience music tool. It is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information.
