Privacy Policy — Semantika

Last updated: 2026-10-27

Semantika is made by Magmanet. This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: your data stays on your device, unless you choose to join the online leaderboards. The app also sends anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off.

What we collect

By default, only anonymous usage statistics (see below), which you can turn off. Semantika has no sign-up, no advertising and no tracking. We never sell or share your data.

The other exception is the optional online leaderboards (below): if, and only if, you join them, the nickname, city and daily results you choose to publish are sent to the Magmanet leaderboard server.

Where your data is stored

Everything you enter is saved only on your device, in the app's private storage. It is removed when you uninstall the app.

The app's Copy backup feature (Settings → Your data) copies your data as text to your clipboard, so you can keep it somewhere you choose. Where you paste it is up to you; the app never uploads it.

Online leaderboards (optional, off until you join)

Semantika can show public leaderboards for the daily puzzle (in your city, your region, Israel and the world). The first time you open them, the app asks whether you want to take part. If you choose "Not now", nothing is ever sent to the leaderboards.

If you join:

Semantika is not directed at children, and the leaderboards are only for players who choose to join.

Internet use

Without the leaderboards, Semantika works entirely offline; the only internet requests are the anonymous usage statistics below and, on Android, the update check. With the leaderboards joined, it also connects to the Magmanet leaderboard server, to send your results and load the tables. The Android "internet" permission is needed for that and for any network connection, including the direct local-network connection between phones in Play nearby.

On iPhone and iPad there is no update check: the App Store handles updates. On Android, once a day the app checks for a newer version by asking the Magmanet server (EU, Contabo) — the request contains only the app name, its version number and how it was installed (site/Google Play); the server counts checks per app and version in aggregate, stores no identifiers and no IP address; if the server is unavailable the app downloads the public version file from GitHub Pages instead (GitHub may see your IP address). If a newer version exists, the app shows a notice and you choose whether to open the download link. You can turn this off in Settings ("Check for updates automatically").

Anonymous usage statistics

Semantika sends anonymous usage statistics over HTTPS (a short ping once a day; usage events a few times a day at most, batched) to Magmanet's own server, hosted in the EU (Contabo), not to Google or any other third party. It sends the app name and version, your operating-system version (Android or iOS), your language, how the app was installed (on Android: from Google Play, the website or elsewhere; on iPhone and iPad: the App Store or TestFlight), a random install ID, anonymous usage events (which screens and features are used and for how long) and counts of errors by type (a short code for the kind of error, never a message or any content). On Android it also sends your phone's manufacturer and model (never the name you gave the phone); on iPhone and iPad it does not send the device model. The random ID is made by the app when it is installed; it is not a device identifier. No personal content is sent (no words you guess, and no leaderboard nickname or city).

On the server the ID is hashed and no IP address is stored. Raw data is deleted after 400 days. It is used only to count active users and improve the app, never for advertising or profiling, and it is never sold or shared.

This is on by default. You can turn it off in Settings ("Share anonymous usage statistics"). Turning it off stops sending immediately and deletes the random ID and any unsent usage events from your phone.

Permissions

The app asks for a permission only when you use the feature that needs it. You can say no and still use the rest of the app.

Play nearby: what is exchanged

When you play with friends nearby, these go directly between the phones in the game, and nowhere else: the display name and emoji avatar you choose, and the game state (guesses, scores, who found the word). Nothing goes to the internet or to us, and nothing is kept after the game except your own results on your phone.

Word data and attribution

Semantika's word-similarity data files are derived from the fastText Common Crawl word vectors by Facebook AI Research (Meta AI; Grave et al., 2018), https://fasttext.cc, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/), and are shared under the same licence. The data is bundled in the app; no word you type is sent anywhere.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and publish the new version at the same address.
